As a website designer and online marketing consultant for small business, I find that many of my clients hire me because they are extremely disappointed with the search engine rankings and number of visitors to their websites. The majority of these websites were built by amateur friends or by the owner on do it yourself (DIY) template sites. The site might look good but my clients eventually realize after a few months or even a few years that they need professional help to improve their local search optimization and to create social media ready websites.Why Do It Yourself Websites Fail Small Businesses:
1. Keywords and SEO:
One of the main reasons a potential client finds your site is because of the keywords that you put into your content. These are the words you believe your potential client will use to do a search for your services and products in search engines like Google and Bing. If your webmaster cousin or you can not figure out how to do this effectively, you have wasted your time.
2. Social Media Shared Content:
Once you set your site up, you will want to make sure your readers can share your content with their friends on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. Has the DIY site provided you with a way to accomplish this? Often it is just a simple plug-in to install. But how do you get this plug-in and is it reliable?

Getting your opt-in box up for your newsletter so that you can collect the all important leads to nurture should be a simple task. Does the DIY site have any tutorials to help you with this and is all this technical babble “Greek” to you? It can be accomplished with access to the right script but everything takes time and knowledge to do effectively.
5. Email and Social Media Marketing Promotions:
So once your site is up and it looks good, you will most likely have a nice looking what they call static or brochure website. How are you going to invite people to come to your site on a regular basis? How do these email, newsletter and social media campaigns work anyway? Having a social media ready website can be achieved but not necessarily with one of the free or cheap DIY template sites.
Do It Right the First Time and Rely on an Affordable Professional:
A professional with a little more experience than your cousin or yourself can get you a website working with all the latest online marketing strategies in place without breaking your budget. Ask your business friends for referrals. Feel free to look these up on LinkedIn and check out the recommendations. Contact these clients to get a good idea of how the webmaster solved the problems we listed above.
